CAMBRIAN STATION OSWESTRY

Aerial photogrammetry and survey to create 3D models and CAD drawing of this historic railway headquarters, as part of an ongoing conservation and restoration project led by Shropshire Council.

Background

This large Victorian building was a mainline station and railway company headquarters.  After the line closed in the 1960s the building saw a variety of uses — including being divided into space for business and private accommodation. It is now empty, and the hub for a volunteer-led charity dedicated to preserving and restoring Oswestry's railway heritage.

Heritage Innovation was commissioned by Shropshire Council to undertake aerial survey and photogrammetry, to inform ongoing conservation work.

Scope

The site is on one of the main roads leading into Oswestry, with constant traffic. On the other site is a heritage railway which is open to the public. Heritage Innovation used a lightweight drone to undertake aerial photogrammetry from which to create 3D models. Ground control points were deployed to ensure dimensional accuracy.

The main focus of the work was the roof structure - but also included the principal external elevations.

Outcomes

Over 3000 images were used to generate and render an accurately georeferenced 3D model of the roof and building exterior. This was used to generate orthographic plans and elevations, which in turn were used to produce a CAD drawing of the roof and details.

More information about the history of the site, and some additional images, can be found below.

Site history

The Cambrian Station in Oswestry (Shropshire, UK) was built in c.1865 and served as the headquarters of the Cambrian Railway Company until it was absorbed into the Great Western Railway in 1923. The line was closed in the 1960s.

In recent years the station has become the main centre of Cambrian Heritage Railways Ltd., a volunteer-led charity dedicated to preserving and restoring the unique railway heritage of Oswestry. They run passenger services on a 2.4km line from the Cambrian Station to Weston Wharf.
