BACKGROUND
The growth of development-driven archaeology in the UK since the early 1990s has resulted in increased understanding of urban development, particularly in larger towns and cities. However the impact of urban archaeology in Wales has tended to be lower than elsewhere in the UK, for three main reasons.
- Urbanisation did not take place consistently across Wales, and was often on a small scale
- The scale and speed of modern development is much smaller in Wales than in other parts of the UK
- Thematic / synthetic projects in Welsh archaeology have tended to focus on upland areas and prehistoric sites; urban archaeology is not a traditional focus for research

Planning and conservation advice
Planning for heritage sites and conservation projects requires specialist expertise. We have over 30 years experience of the UK planning system, and a comprehensive understanding of the National Planning Policy Framework (NPPF) in England and Planning Policy Wales (PPW). Heritage statements and impact assessments
A heritage statement (or heritage impact assessment) summarises the history of a site, and describes its significance - including its setting. It can assess the potential impact of a proposed development and may also include a strategy to mitigate any adverse effects. We have a thorough understanding of relevant local, national and international planning policy, and extensive experience of preparing heritage impact assessments. We can quickly and expertly assess your site to support your project ambitions.
Cultural heritage for EIA
Environmental Impact Assessments (EIA) include an Environmental Statement (ES) with an archaeology and cultural heritage chapter. This usually comprises a desk-based assessment, drawing on a variety of heritage and environmental information. We are experienced in preparing proportionate ES heritage chapters, often in close co-operation with specialist partners. We have a comprehensive understanding of UK national and regional planning policy and practice, and can help towards pragmatic outcomes for your heritage issues.
Publication
A review of the results from the first stage of the project was published in 2021 in the peer-reviewed journal Medieval Settlement Research. The article is available on the ADS website here: MSR36_03_Belford.pdf
Subsequent research was presented at the European Association of Archaeologists conferences in Budapest (2022), and Rome (2024). Publications in preparation include chapters for forthcoming books published by the Medieval Settlement Research Group and the EAA Urban Archaeology Community.
